Flag Girl

flaggirl

Walking around outside the Forbidden City, I came upon this sweet mom and daughter.  We couldn’t communicate with anything other than smiles and hand signals, but we had a great time.  Those are the memorable experiences while traveling that I love, even if the interaction only lasts five minutes.

Food – Sugar Cane Goodness

sugarcane

Everywhere we went in southeast Asia, vendors were selling cut sugar cane with a sweet sticky rice in the center.  It was delicious.  We were tuk tuking through a village near Angkor Wat in Cambodia when we stopped to watch this husband and wife preparing the snack to be sold.

WHS – The Potala Palace

llhasa

Lhasa.  Tibet.  What a place!  I wouldn’t say it was a vacation, traveling through Tibet is pretty hard-coare traveling.  The barren landscape, the altitude, the constant struggle between the Tibetans and the Chinese.  It’s all very interesting.  The Potala Palace is absolutely gorgeous, inside and out.

Painted with Buddhist symbols in bright colors, the [...]

Traveling throught the French countryside in the Loire valley, we passed many a castle.  That, of course, is what makes the Loire valley such a tourist destination.  We don’t always want to go in to tourist sight after tourist sight,so on this particular day, we noticed a sign on the side of the road [...]

WHS – Umm Ar Rasas

rasas

Jordan is full of surprises, and this World Heritage Site is one of them.  Umm ar Rasas houses some of the best mosaics in the country.

World Heritage Site – Nemrut Dağı

Nemrudheadsmall

One cold, cold June morning, we climbed up Mt. Nemrut to visit the famous heads.  I wrote a full on post about it here.  Have you been to Nemrut?  What was your experience?  For me, it fits into the “once in a lifetime” category.

Carthage Harbour

One of the prettiest scenes I came across while in Tunisia, this is the old Roman harbour in Carthage.  The pots make the image, and they seem to be out of place.  Have you ever taken a photo that surprises you?

World Heritage Site – Herculaneum, Italy

Herc001small

This photo taken in one of the houses in Herculaeum shows how intact some of the tiles and rooms are.  It’s pretty amazing.  I think it’s one of the most interesting World Heritage Sites that I’ve ever been to.
